Testosterone Helps Regulate Blood Sugar Levels
Researchers at Tulane University recently discovered a hormone-signaling pathway used by testosterone to help regular blood sugar levels in aging men. (ScienceDaily) Study findings published in the medical journal Cell Metabolism reveal a potential treatment pathway for physicians to treat insulin intolerance in aging men with low T.
Male mice in a control group and other male mice that were specially bred with pancreatic beta cells minus the androgen receptor (receptor for testosterone) were fed a diet rich in fats and sugars. Glucose testing revealed that the mice without androgen receptors experienced lower levels of insulin secretion, thus making them more susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes. Further testing of human pancreatic islet cells, the origin source of insulin in the human body, demonstrated testosterone’s ability to moderate insulin production.
Study senior author Dr. Franck Mauvais-Jarvis, Price-Goldsmith professor in the Department of Medicine at Tulane University’s School of Medicine shared more on the profound discovery, “Our study shows that testosterone is an anti-diabetic hormone in men. If we can modulate its action without side effects, it is a therapeutic avenue for type 2 diabetes.” (Cell Metabolism)
So, what does this have to do with you, the reader, as you look at keeping clear of type 2 diabetes? It means that Tulane may have just discovered a way to clearly prevent men like you and me from developing type 2 diabetes in the future. Keeping or restoring our testosterone to healthy levels is now a proven way to trigger the pancreas and maintain safe blood sugar levels. This could mean no more risk of developing type 2 diabetes, no more diabetic diets on your horizon, and no more insulin shots for type 2 diabetes.
