Need to drop belly fat? Get rid of cardio and say hello to anaerobic!

Man Preparing to Serve

Whether you look like the Michelin Man or you’re storing a small pot belly, cardio isn’t going to do the trick. If you want to lose the stubborn midsection and get lean, you need to kick cardio to the curb. Say hello to anaerobic training!

“Aerobics?,” you may think, “I don’t want to do aerobics.” We’re talking about anaerobics, not aerobics, which is a huge difference. Anaerobic exercise is defined as, “short-lasting, high-intensity activity, where your body’s demand for oxygen exceeds the oxygen supply available. Anaerobic exercise relies on energy sources that are stored in the muscles and, unlike aerobic exercise, is not dependent on oxygen from (breathing) the air.” (SparkPeople) If aerobics are power walking, anaerobics are wind sprints (minus puking on the sideline… sometimes). You get the picture.

Anaerobics feature interval training with periods of high intensity spaced between more moderate but still upbeat intervals. (Breaking Muscle) Popular examples of anaerobic exercise include heavy weightlifting, basketball, tennis, baseball, softball, sprinting (either running or cycling), and jumping. High-intensity interval training, or HIIT as it’s often written, combine a series of high-intensity exercise repetitions with minimal rests in between intervals. CrossFit would be an excellent example of a HIIT with the daily WOD.

Dieting doesn’t put the demand to burn calories like anaerobic exercise can. Interval workouts increase production of fat-burning enzymes. Also, because your body’s demand for oxygen exceeds the amount of available oxygen during anaerobic exercises, your body naturally consumes more oxygen in the 24-hour period following an intense workout. Higher oxygen intake levels allow your body to burn calories at a faster rate for a longer period of time.

If you want to finally lose that stubborn belly fat, ditch cardio and try anaerobic exercise. One of the known contributors for big bellies in aging men is low testosterone. Naturally restoring your testosterone to healthy levels will allow your body’s metabolism to burn through unwanted belly fat. You feel healthier and more energetic and your body melts away the spare tire, a win/win for your future.
