The New England Journal of Medicine recently published findings from a one-year trial study of serum testosterone concentration treatments in older men. Study moderators assigned 790 men age 65 and older with clinical serum testosterone levels of <275 ng/dl and hypogonadic symptoms. Study participants received either testosterone gel (AbbVie AndroGel 1%) at a dosage of 5 grams/day or placebo gel within a one-year study duration.

The study featured three separate trials with assignees participating in at least one of the three: Sexual Function, Vitality, and Physical Function. The testosterone gel aimed to raise the participants’ serum testosterone levels to the average range of a healthy 19-40 year-old man. Serum testosterone levels were measured at months 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9 at a centralized laboratory.

Participants in the Sexual Function trial experienced a dynamic increase in sexual interest, erectile function, and overall sexual activity. The Physical Function trial measured walking distance among study participants in a six-minute time span. There was no noticeable difference in walking distance except when comparing study participants who took part in all three trials. Vitality trial participants who received testosterone gel treatments experienced virtually the same outcome as placebo participants, but testosterone patients reported a slight increase in mood and sense of well-being.

While the Institute of Medicine study results may show only slight to moderate health benefits for aging men, there is hope that ongoing testosterone trial studies will continue to prove the safety and efficacy of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). We will continue researching and studying the latest in testosterone-focused medical treatments and trials. Our goal is to provide our patients with the most informed perspective on a life-changing opportunity with regaining healthy testosterone levels.
