Low testosterone is more widespread than ever before. Did you know that one out of every four men age 30 or older suffers from low testosterone? (ABC) “That’s not me,” you may think, “I’m too active, too virile, too manly to have low testosterone… right?” You might be more at risk than you believe. There are multiple lies many men unknowingly accept about low testosterone. Here are three of the biggest lies men believe about low testosterone.
“My diet and lifestyle don’t affect my testosterone.”
Spoiler alert, Mr. Know-It-All: your diet and lifestyle play a huge role in your testosterone production. Consuming large amounts of refined carbs, like bread and pasta, can kill your testosterone production, not to mention destroying your sex drive. (Men’s Fitness) Other lifestyle decisions, such as how much stress your carry, obesity, sleep apnea, and other health conditions can seriously affect your testosterone production.
“Younger guys can’t have low testosterone.”
Studies show that men as young as 18 years old can have hypogonadism (clinically low testosterone levels). Damage to essential hormone-producing glands, like the pituitary gland or testes, can contribute to low testosterone production at any age. As far as older men, low testosterone is not necessarily a natural result of aging. While our bodies do produce less testosterone as we age, this doesn’t mean you’re doomed to have hypogonadism.
“Low testosterone only affects my sex life.”
A diminished sex drive is only one of several symptoms that can come from low testosterone. Lack of energy and motivation, loss of muscle strength and mass, swimming through “brain fog,” and being susceptible to significant health conditions, such as heart disease and type II diabetes, are just a few of the added risks of low testosterone.
